Winter Leagues Update - Week 21

The Hasbeens — Lanes 11/12 We bowled against the #1-ranked team in the league last night, and it didn’t go as planned—at least for us. Although they are ranked higher in the standings, we hold a better overall head-to-head record against them. They have two very strong bowlers and two others who can get on streaks. Last night, those streaks showed up. None of our team had a truly terrible night, aside from one rough game from one bowler. Overall, our numbers were respectable. They spotted us approximately 64 pins per game on handicap, so we knew we needed to keep things close. Their streak players bowled 70 and 23 pins over their averages, respectively, which quickly erased our handicap advantage. Their third bowler opening with a 236 didn’t help either. They swept all three games and total pins, costing us seven points for the night. Game three was the closest contest. Bowling isn’t fading away. It’s holding its ground—and in some places, it’s growing. The USBC’s 2026 State of the Association makes that clear. League membership is staying steady, even after some rough years. Big events are strong, too. The USBC Open had its largest team turnout in more than 10 years, and the Women’s Championships keep passing 4,000 teams year after year. That doesn’t happen by accident. There’s also a big push toward youth bowling, with more scholarships, new leagues, and larger Junior Gold events. Centers are being inspected with better tools, and rules are being updated to keep competition fair. Winter League Updates - Week 20

The Hasbeens — Position Round — Lanes 13/14 Every ten weeks in the Lane Masters League features a position-round matchup: first place bowls second, third bowls fourth, and so on. This week, we found ourselves clinging to third place by a slim margin—just 0.8 of a point. We entered the night with a 71–62 record, while our opponents stood at 70–63. On paper—and in reality—they are the stronger team, but our handicap kept us neck and neck in the standings. They boast two exceptional bowlers, both averaging over 200, including an anchor carrying a formidable 223.75 average. Their third bowler isn’t far behind at 204. The leadoff is a steady 140-average bowler, and their second bowler is unpredictable—averaging 165 but fully capable of firing a 200-plus game at any moment. Winter League Recap Week 19

  The Hasbeens — Lanes 11/12 After a much-needed break for Christmas and New Year’s, The Hasbeens returned to action, sitting in third place heading into the night’s competition. We needed a strong team effort to hold our position in the standings as we approached next week’s position rounds. Our opponents, currently in eighth place, were not a team to overlook. Three of their four bowlers average 170 or better, and their young standout carries an impressive 209 average. We expected him to get his numbers, so our strategy was to focus on the other three to make up ground. While we held a 104-pin handicap advantage, that margin could disappear quickly if any of the remaining bowlers caught fire. Their lowest-average player was absent, replaced by a substitute who carries a solid 170+ average in two other winter leagues at this house. We knew the challenge ahead. Winter League Update - Final of 2025!

These will be the final updates for 2025, as we are taking the next two weeks off for Christmas and New Year celebrations. The Hasbeens — Lanes 15/16 What began as a rough night ultimately turned into one of our better performances this season. We faced the eighth-place team in the league—an opponent you cannot afford to underestimate. While their highest average is 177, meaning they are not stacked with overwhelming threats, they show up consistently each week, and a couple of their players can beat you quickly if given the opportunity. Their anchor (the 177-average bowler) rolled games of 180 and 193 in Games 2 and 3. Their next-highest average player posted a 532 series, finishing with a 204 in Game 3. Had we not been bowling as well as we did, either of those performances could have decided the night. On our side, we had several standout performances. Winter League Updates - Week 16

 The Hasbeens had to roll without me Tuesday night while I was traveling and couldn’t make the event. One of the guys texted to say they took 5 of the 7 available points against a solid team. They won Game 1 by 54 pins, dropped Game 2 by 36, won Game 3 by 11, and claimed the overall total by 29 pins—all while giving up 41 pins per game in handicap. Well done, guys! They performed just fine without me. Come to think of it, they seem to do better when I’m gone most weeks, lol. Last night, Right-Left-Right faced the No. 10 team in the league. Our performance over the past few weeks had slipped enough to knock us from 1st to 4th going into the night. We started by giving up 21 handicap pins, but since one of their players didn’t show, that dropped to a 10-pin difference. They didn’t have any true powerhouses, but a steady anchor and a streaky middle-man meant they could be dangerous at any point. We took all 7 points in a set of close games. Winter League Update - Trial and Error

  THE HASBEENS — Lanes 19/20 Tonight’s performance could be summed up with the words from John 11:39,  “Lord, by this time he stinketh…” We faced one of the strongest teams in the league and walked away with only two points. It was an evening marked more by frustration than triumph. Our opponents, currently sitting in third place, are easily one of the most stacked teams in the league. Their anchor rolled a 300 earlier this year in the Monday night league and holds a 279 high game in ours. Even their substitute wasn’t a downgrade—he came in carrying a 189 average. We had our work cut out for us from the start. Game 1 was a masterclass in how to beat a team with a higher handicap. They spotted us 140 pins per game, but you’d never know it—they came out firing. Their 854 scratch game included scores of 226, 245, and 237. Even their lowest scorer finished six pins over average. Game 2 went our way, though I’m still not sure why.
