Kicking Off the Summer Bowling League with High Hopes

Hey there, bowling fans! It's May 6, 2025, and I’m absolutely buzzing because tonight marks the start of the summer league! After our fall/winter league wrapped up in March, I was on the fence about whether to lace up my bowling shoes this summer or take a breather. Let’s be real—sometimes you think you need a break, but then you realize you’re just itching to get back on those lanes. That’s exactly what happened to me. I missed the sound of pins crashing, the camaraderie with my teammates, and that sweet feeling of nailing a strike. So, here I am, ready to roll!

Originally, I had these grand plans to practice weekly during the off-season, focusing on the parts of my game that need a little TLC. You know, the usual suspects: footwork, spare shooting, and first-ball accuracy. But, as life tends to do, it threw a few curveballs my way, and those practice sessions? Yeah, they didn’t happen. I even packed my gear for a business trip, thinking I’d sneak in a few games at local alleys. Plot twist: every bowling house was packed with league play, and open bowling was a no-go. Talk about a strikeout!

But last week, I finally got a chance to hit the lanes for a single practice session, and let me tell you—it was encouraging. I was throwing my Motiv Black Venom, and it was like the ball and I were having a heart-to-heart. I rolled a 9-bagger (yep, nine strikes in a row!), and the ball felt better than ever. I could practically hear it whispering, “We got this.” My spare game was also on point, which is huge because spares have been my nemesis. I’ve been working on slowing down my release, flattening my wrist, and keeping things smooth. It’s paying off, especially on right-side spare combos like the 3-6-10 and 6-10. The Black Venom’s been a game-changer for those.

Now, the left-side spares? They’re still a work in progress. The 7-pin is my current frenemy—about a 50/50 shot right now. When I miss, it’s usually because I’m pulling it left into the gutter, short of the pin. But I’m not sweating it too much. Progress, not perfection, right?

As I head into this 12-week summer season, I’ve got some clear goals in mind. First, I want to shoot a clean game—no open frames, just strikes and spares. Second, I’m laser-focused on sharpening my first-ball accuracy. And third, I’m tightening up my approach and footwork to make sure I’m consistent. The summer league is like a warm-up for my main event, the fall/winter Prime Timers season, so I’m treating these weeks as a chance to fine-tune my game.

I’m not expecting miracles, but that practice session last week has me feeling optimistic. There’s something about the rhythm of bowling—the approach, the release, the anticipation—that just pulls you in. Whether it’s the thrill of a strike or the satisfaction of picking up a tricky spare, I’m ready to soak it all in.

So, here’s to summer nights at the alley, good friends, and maybe a few more 9-baggers. Got any bowling goals of your own? Drop them in the comments—I’d love to hear what’s driving you this season. Let’s hit the lanes and make some noise!

Keep striking,
