Summer League Recap - Week 3

Summer League Arsenal (L to R - Ebonite GB5, Motiv Black Venom, Ebonite Destiny Hybrid)

Due to a work trip next week that conflicts with my regular bowling night, I pre-bowled my Week 3 games last night on lanes 19 and 20, where I competed in Week 1. Unlike my earlier experience, the mechanical issues from Week 1 were absent, and the freshly oiled lanes allowed me to revert to my standard league strategy (see my Week 2 recap for details).

Joining me were two bowlers from another team, making up their missed Tuesday games due to severe weather. Both were skilled, 200+ average players, noticeably younger than I am. I recognized one from his 300 game in the winter league, though we hadn’t met before. With only three of us on the lane pair, the pace was brisk, as expected.

My first game was my strongest, scoring 184. Games 2 and 3 yielded lower scores of 145 and 138, respectively, for a 467 series and a 155.67 average. My strike percentage was 36%, with a first-ball average of 7.82 and a spare conversion rate of 42% (8/19). Notably, I achieved a 100% conversion rate on single-pin spares, including both attempts at the challenging 9-pin. However, my open-frame percentage was higher than desired at 35%.

I’ve observed a consistent pattern: my first game typically yields the highest score, averaging 179.67, while Game 2 drops to a steady 150, and Game 3 plummets to a disappointing 122.67. This decline likely stems from my struggle to adapt to lane transitions. I often hesitate to adjust my position, either due to uncertainty, stubbornness, or fear, and lack the speed or rev rate to shift left and maintain ball hook. Instead, I rely on ball selection to manage changes, which highlights my need for more practice. Increased time on the lanes between league nights, focusing on transition adjustments, is essential.

Overall, the night had its highlights and challenges. My work travel next week, compounded by Southwest Airlines’ updated baggage policy, means I’ll leave my bowling equipment at home. Look for my Week 4 update in a couple of weeks. Keep striking!
