Summer League - Week 12 Recap

Image
Last night marked the end of our summer league at Victory Lanes—twelve weeks of blood, sweat, and tears. It was a fun, albeit hot , summer. Our team was matched up against an equally competitive opponent on lanes 17 and 18, and it turned out to be one for the books. That lane pair has given us trouble all season, and last night was no exception. Due to multiple scoring errors, someone (yours truly) had to sit at the settee the entire night manually updating the scores for both teams. Thankfully, we only needed two or three re-racks, which was a small win. Overall, we finished in a reasonable amount of time—not the last team to leave the lanes for once. Our performance was inconsistent. One of our teammates stepped up and bowled his best three-game series of the year, helping us secure three more points toward our season total. We won Game 1 and took overall pin count, but dropped Games 2 and 3. I don’t anticipate us moving up much, if at all, in the final standings. Personally, I bo...

Summer League - Week 11 Recap

Image
Game Summary: Games 1 and 3 were rough. Game 2 was my best, where I shot a 180. We managed to win that game and picked up 2 points for the night, but unfortunately lost Games 1 and 3 along with the overall pin count. Team Reflection: Despite our struggles, I’ve really enjoyed being on this team this year. We've hovered at or near the bottom of the standings all season, but every week has been genuinely fun. It’s been rewarding to watch two of my teammates improve over time—especially one who had never bowled in a league in his 60+ years. Lane Conditions: We bowled on Lanes 1 and 2, which gave us a lot of trouble. Lane 1 had repeated pinsetter breakdowns, and we had ball return issues on the pair. There was also a scoring glitch early on, but that cleared up by the 4th frame of Game 1. Opponents: We faced a father/son duo, and they really brought their A-game. The father rolled a 700+ series, and his son—who’s only been bowling for seven months—strung together several strikes...

Why You’re Missing Spares—And How to Fix It (with links)

Image
If you average between 135 and 160 and often miss makeable spares, the problem likely isn’t a lack of effort—it’s a flaw in your technique. Throwing more games won’t help if you're repeating the same mistakes. What you really need is a reliable spare shooting system. A coach can help you build one tailored to your game and the lane conditions. Then it’s up to you to practice until it becomes second nature. Let’s break down the seven most common reasons bowlers miss spares—and how you can correct them. 1. Poor Alignment Proper alignment is fundamental. If your starting position doesn’t match the spare’s location, your shot will miss, no matter how solid your release. Always adjust your feet and sightline based on where the spare is. Consistent targeting starts with consistent positioning.  Check out bowlingball.com's explanation of the 3-6-9 Spare System here: https://www.bowlingball.com/BowlVersity/bowling-spares-as-easy-as-3-6-9 .   2. Mastering Bowling Lane Friction: A Senior Bowler’s Guide to Better Scores

Image
🎯 Master Lane Friction to Boost Your Bowling Game Bowling isn’t just about knocking down pins — it’s a dynamic blend of timing, technique, and physics. For senior bowlers , understanding bowling lane friction can lead to better control, higher scores, and more enjoyable games. As we age, our physical strengths and limitations change — but our love for the game doesn’t have to. With the right adjustments and knowledge, you can make lane friction your ally. 🧪 What Is Bowling Lane Friction — And Why Does It Matter? Lane friction is the resistance between your bowling ball and the lane. It determines how much your ball skids, hooks, or rolls. 🛢️ What Affects Lane Friction? Oil Patterns : Heavier oil in the center leads to more skid. Lighter oil outside the track area increases friction and causes earlier hooking. Lane Surface Condition : Worn or synthetic lanes often produce more friction than freshly oiled wood lanes. 💡 Want a deeper dive into oil patterns? Read th...
Summer League Recap - Week 10 Facing the #1 team in the league—without their two best players—gave us a golden opportunity. One of their top bowlers pre-bowled, and the other was absent, using his handicap score for the night. We capitalized in a big way, sweeping all three games and total pins for a 7-0 victory! While they beat us in raw scores, our 180-pin handicap advantage made all the difference. ⚙️ Lane Issues Return: Déjà Vu from Week 2 Lanes 17 and 18 lived up to their notorious reputation. Just like in Week 2, the automatic scoring system malfunctioned, forcing us to make continual manual score adjustments. Thankfully, a few veteran bowlers—myself included—knew how to navigate the Brunswick 2000 system. To make matters worse, “dead wood” and dropped pins were common, slowing things down even further. However, with only two active bowlers on their side, the pace felt pretty balanced. For once, we weren’t the last ones to leave the building—a rare win in i...

Summer League Recap - Week 9

Image
New settee areas at Victory Lanes in Scottsboro, AL - photo credit Josh Fralick What a Difference a Week Makes We arrived at the center and immediately noticed some visual and practical improvements. The settee area had been expanded, giving bowlers more space to move around. Slowly but surely, management is making positive changes to the facility. Summer isn’t the most ideal time—financially—to implement upgrades, but I’m grateful they’re paying attention and actively working to improve the center. Our string of equipment delays (and failures) was nonexistent last night. We were assigned to lanes 9 and 10—my favorite pair, located near the center of the house—and everything ran smoothly. No scoring issues. No dropped pins. No long waits for the pinsetters to rack us up. Mechanically, it was a flawless night, and we were one of the first teams to finish rather than the last to leave. We faced a team ranked 8th in the league standings—middle of the pack—but they had a couple of solid...

Bowling Ball Coverstocks Explained: The Key to Unlocking Your Best Game

Image
Have you ever bowled a few perfect frames, only to see your performance unravel halfway through the night? Maybe your ball lost its hook or glided through the pocket with no real impact. The issue might not be your form—it could be your coverstock . Understanding bowling ball coverstocks isn’t just for pro shop technicians or PBA pros. It's essential for any bowler looking to improve their game and make smarter equipment decisions. In this guide, we’ll explore what a coverstock is, why it matters, and how to choose the right one based on your playing conditions. 🎳 What Is a Bowling Ball Coverstock—and Why Should You Care? The coverstock is the outer shell of a bowling ball—the part that makes direct contact with the lane. While the core affects rotation and dynamics, it’s the coverstock that dictates how your ball grips the lane and reacts to oil patterns. In fact, experts estimate that the coverstock accounts for up to 70% of a ball’s motion . That means if you're strug...
