Summer League Update - Week 8
🎳 League Night Mayhem: Broken Lanes, Boiling Heat & a Whole Lot of Bowling Drama
How do you sum up a night so chaotic you need a walkie-talkie just to bowl?
Where do I even begin to explain everything that happened during last night’s league play?
Do I start with the lane malfunctions?
Or our pitiful performance on said malfunctioning lanes?
Or maybe the sweltering heat we had to endure during said pitiful performance on said malfunctioning lanes?
Decisions, decisions...
🔧 When the Lanes Fight Back
Lane 8 wouldn't recycle the pinsetter and stayed frozen for the early minutes of practice. I don’t know what the issue was, but thankfully it resolved itself and we were able to start on time.
…And then came the end of the 7th frame in Game 1.
That’s when one of the rollers on the ball return shattered — literally — into what looked like bite-sized pieces. Just like that, our pair was down.
With no breakdown lanes available (several were already out of commission), league officials had a dilemma on their hands. Eventually, they made the call:
-
Our team moved to lane 6 (lane 5 is perpetually broken).
-
The other team moved to lane 13 (lane 14 has also been out for a while).
🤯 A Pin Counter on Psychedelics?
After a short setup delay on the new lanes, chaos resumed.
The pin counter on lane 6 clearly wasn’t in a right state of mind. It miscounted constantly, requiring us to manually adjust scores after nearly every throw.
To make things even more fun, the pinsetter randomly swept the rack on second shots, dragging Game 2 into what felt like eternal overtime.
Eventually, a lane attendant came to the rescue. She sat at our table to manage scoring corrections so we could focus on bowling. Huge help. But even then, she had to run to the back multiple times to reset pins manually.
At that point, I ended up with a walkie-talkie, calling out instructions like we were on a rescue mission. I’d report what was needed, and she stayed in the back making it happen.
🚨 Moving Again: The Final Game Dash
After Game 2, something had to give.
League officials decided to move us once more — this time to lanes 1 and 2. Following another lane setup delay, we were back at it.
Only this time? It was absolute madness. These lanes were toast!
I think our final game lasted about 15 minutes, total — and that was with four bowlers. At that point, nobody cared about averages, form, or finesse. We just wanted out of there.
We wrapped up, turned in our score sheet, and — surprise! — we were the last team to leave the building. Again.
🎯 Final Scores (If They Even Matter)
Given the distractions, the scoring was... not great.
Most of us bowled below average, though I did manage one decent game — Game 2, ironically, the one where nothing worked and everything was broken. Go figure.
Oddly enough, my highest game this season happened on a night when we bowled through three tornado warnings — and didn’t miss a beat.
Bowling is wild sometimes.
As for how many points we won or lost? I have no idea — and probably won’t care until the league sheets are posted.
🎳 Until Next Time...
Here’s hoping for smoother lanes, cooler air, and a pin counter that can at least count to ten.
Keep striking!
