A Stellar Performance in Morgantown
Morgantown, WV – On August 9, 2025, John Janawicz captivated bowling enthusiasts with a remarkable performance, clinching his fifth major title in just his third year on the PBA50 Tour. The Johnny Petraglia BVL PBA50 Tournament of Champions, presented by Pleasant Day Schools, marked his ninth career title and solidified his second consecutive Player of the Year award. "Winning the final event of the season and securing Player of the Year is like a fairy-tale conclusion," the 52-year-old remarked. "To triumph in a tournament associated with Johnny Petraglia and BVL is especially meaningful. Johnny is a true icon and ambassador for bowling. This is my third BVL event victory, so I jokingly told him that if BVL sponsored the entire PBA50 Tour, I might have an even better shot."
Championship Match Highlights
In the championship match, Janawicz faced off against Parker Bohn III, emerging victorious with a score of 230-202. He started strong, delivering five strikes in the first six frames. Despite a split in the seventh, Janawicz maintained his composure, while Bohn III encountered a split in the sixth, his only open frame. Bohn III mounted a comeback with a double, but a solid 9-pin in the ninth halted his momentum. Janawicz sealed the win with a celebratory gesture, raising both fists and sharing heartfelt embraces with Bohn III and fellow competitors. "You have to stay confident and avoid panic, because it solves nothing," Janawicz said, reflecting on his approach. "I focus on maximizing my potential through hard work, physical fitness, and smart decision-making."
A Season of Consistency
Janawicz’s 2025 PBA50 Tour season was a testament to his skill and dedication. He reached seven stepladder finals, cashed in every event, and joined Chris Barnes and Brad Angelo as one of only three bowlers to win two titles this year. His nine career titles tie him with his late doubles partner, Pete Couture, on the PBA50 all-time list. "Tying Pete means a lot to me," Janawicz said. "He was a mentor and a great friend who shared invaluable advice that shaped my career."
Stepladder Finals Recap
The tournament’s stepladder finals showcased fierce competition. In the opening match, Tom Hess dominated Brad Angelo, 246-177, with four strikes on each lane. Hess then faced Mika Koivuniemi, starting with six consecutive strikes. Koivuniemi, recovering from an early 7-10 split, responded with four strikes but fell short at 235-222 after Hess left a 4-7-9 split in the eighth. In the semifinal, Parker Bohn III outlasted Koivuniemi, 225-213, with a strong finish that included a spare, strike, and spare. Koivuniemi’s back-to-back spares couldn’t close the gap.
